| Casein Paints have a rich and ancient history. Prehistoric man found that there was an abundance of pigment to be found in the earth from plants and berries, but pigments were not enough by themselves - they needed a binder to hold them together. Milk curd, eggs, and the sap from certain trees could be processed into binders for paints. This paint made from milk curd is the forerunner of today's caseins - Shiva is one of the few manufacturers in the world still making this time-honored painting medium. Caseins may be used to successfully produce a painting with the transparency of a watercolor, the smooth opaque of tempera and gouache, the heavily-textured opaques of acrylics and oils, and everything in between. All Shiva Casein Paints are chemically-pure pigments and are permanent to light, gases, alkalis and acids. They may be applied on almost any grease-free surface. |
