Pack a stick of softened butter into the "bell" that forms the underside of the lid partially fill the outer crock with water replace the lid. No longer do you have to shave or hack at hard butter (which then destroys your toast as you attempt to spread it) or worry about butter going too soft and spoiling if you leave it out.
