Richard Allen was born into slavery in Philadelphia in 1760. He founded the African Methodist Episcopal Church and served as its first bishop. He also established day schools for African Americans in that city. He died a free man in 1831, respected for his intelligence, generosity of spirit and his christian teachings. Retired March 2001.
