Item # 40065 Wigilia, or Christmas Eve, is a time of great celebration in Poland. It is a time of feasting, friendship and rituals that are rooted deep in the Catholic faith. The Polish Father Christmas wears a coat of heavy colorful embroidery, so typical to Polish rural areas. He carries on his back many items used in Polish Christmas customs. Straw is used to place under the table linen as a reminder of the straw-filled manger in Bethlehem. A picture of the revered Black Madonna, Matka Boska Czetochowska, will be placed in the window with a candle. Gayly painted folk pitchers make treasured gifts. The special prize that Father Christmas brings is the szopka, or Christmas manger, elaborately decorated to resemble a fairy tale castle. Hand painted using up to 20 colors to capture the detail. Made in Poland.
