It replaced the Cape Fear Light, which was located across the Cape Fear River. It is constructed of aluminum and stands 169 feet. The black and gray colors of the lighthouse bands were mixed in the concrete as it was being built so it nevers needs to be painted. Oak Island Lighthouse uses an airport beacon rather than a Fresnel Lens making it the most powerful beam in all of America.
