Item # GAP07The construction of this 19-room winter "cottage" was started in 1884 by Charles Williard Lapham, a wealthy Chicago shoe manufacturer who came south to restore health to his lungs damaged in the great fire. This house is designed with unequal sides, no right angles, no square rooms, and all windows and doors off center. It was the first house in the area to have hot and cold running water, indoor bathrooms, and built-in closets. This house was the winter residence of several owners until 1905 when James G. Patterson purchased the property. When the Patterson family moved into the house, for the first time it became a full time residence.
