Item #1914 Fannie Lou Hamer, granddaughter of a slave and one of 20 brothers and sisters, rose to become part of the conscience of America. Andrew Young called her a "tireless humanitarian who shook the foundation of our nation." She was a committed force behind the grassroots organization of the Southern Civil Rights movement of the 1960's. The focus of her work was in the field of voter registration. The list of her accomplishments and awards is virtually without end, including five doctoral degrees from various colleges and universities. Retired October 2003.
