Drayton mined phosphates at his family plantation, Drayton Hall, located up the Ashley River from the city of Charleston. Architect W. B. W. Howe combined Medieval and Chinese elements to create this spectacular home. State Bird: Carolina Wren Flower: Yellow Jessamine Tree: Palmetto Palm Motto: "While I Breathe I Hope" Nickname: Palmetto State.
