Sentimental Victorians shared their deepest feelings in a special language of flowers. Each flower had its own meaning in this delicate art of communication. A young man would send a bouquet of jonquils if he desired "a return of his affection." This lady might respond with snowdrops indicating "hope," or red tulips "declaring love."
